Wittelsbach Diamond

The fancy blue diamond sells for $24.3m

LONDON - 10. December 2008 - The 35.56-carat fancy blue diamond has been sold at Christie's auction for just under 16.4 million British pounds, or about $24.3m.

Prior to the auction, it was anticipated that the diamond will reach the price of about $15m.

This is one of famous diamonds, known as Wittelsbach diamond. the diamond was originally found in India and purchased by the Spanish King Phillip IV in the 17th century. He included it in the dowry for his teenage daughter Margaret Theresa, who married Leopold I, the Roman Emperor.

After princess' death in 1673, the emperor Leopold kept the diamond, which became part of the inheritance to his children. The diamond came into possession of Wittelsbach family in 1722, which was later sold from their collection.

At the London's auction, it was the first time that the diamond was made available for sale in 80 years.
