Hong Kong
HONG KONG - 4. April 2017 - A rare
oval-shaped 59.6 carat diamond has been sold in Hong Kong for more than $71 million.
The bidding for the
diamond began at $56
million. After only five
minutes of bidding at Sotheby's, the diamond was sold to Hong Kong jewellery retailer Chow Tai Fook
Jewellery.
The winning bid of $71 million sets a new
world record for any gemstone sold at an auction. The earlier record was for $50 million in May last
year for the Oppenheimer Blue diamond in Geneva.
This largest pink diamond ever found was
uncovered by De Beers in 1999 at an African mine. The stone has been called exceptional, so rare and so
